The modern viticultural history of Carneros begins on Stanly Ranch in the
1950s when Louis Martini who then owned part of the historic property began a
clonal trial of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with UC Davis and another historic
California wine family, the Wentes. The well-known Martini and Wente clones of
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay emerged from these trials and were propagated and sold
by the Wente grapevine nursery.
The historic ranch of Judge Stanly greets visitors to the Napa Valley as they
drive up Highway 29 towards the city of Napa and anchors the southeastern
corner of the Carneros. The fourth incarnation of grape vines on this property
began in 2001 with the development of 350 acres of vines using modern clones,
spacing and vertical trellising on the property's
clay-loam soils and gently rolling hills.
Saintsbury has purchased Stanly Ranch fruit
since the 1984 vintage and during the last 20
years it has been a significant source for the
Carneros Pinot Noir and Reserve bottlings. We
have now come full circle with the Vineyard
Series Stanly Ranch one of the successors of the
Reserve Pinot Noir in our Pinot Noir lineup.

and delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess a dusty and ever so slightly edgy finish that is presently on the youthfully austere
side that comes up just a bit short relative to the Cerise."
Saintsbury specializes in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Chardonnay is fermented and aged in barrels coopered in Burgundy. Three styles of Pinot Noir are produced: "Garnet" is a fresh, lively wine full of cherry and raspberry fruit; the wine simply called Carneros Pinot Noir is a more classic rendition; and the Reserve Pinot Noir is the richest and most fully flavored of the vintage.
Technically a part of Napa Valley, the Carneros region straddles both Sonoma & Napa counties. It's the Napa region closest to the San Francisco peninsula and the San Pablo Bay, which is instrumental in controlling the climate of the area. The winds from the San Pablo bay create a cool weather pattern ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir(PEE-noh nwahr)
Pinot Noir is a finicky grape. It only grows in
the right climate, with the right soils and the right care. Perhaps because
it is so difficult is why it is so loved. Pinot Noir hails from Burgundy, a region known for crafting the most collectible and sought-after wines from this varietal.
