Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Honey, apricot, hints of butterscotch all contribute to the wonderful balance of citrusy acids which prevent it being dominated by extremely high sugar levels.

Critical Acclaim

"Dark amber color fading to gold at the rim. Fresh nose of honey and free-run juice complemented by faint floral qualitites. Medium-thick entry imparts a lusciousness of bright fruit - from sweet, free-run gewurztraminer to dried, honeyed and fresh nectarine and apricot with a touch of butterscotch. Light acidity brightens any cloying aspect or suggestino of thickness. Finishes in the throat and memory longer than in the mouth."
98 Points

"The essence of orange blossom, dried apricot, tobacco and butterscotch aromas and flavors. This is thick and viscous, with a vivid structure and a saturated finish. Intensely sweet. A drop goes a long way."
97 Points

"This famed Hungarian dessert wine never disappoints. An elegant nose of honey, apricot, butterscotch and spice is followed by a luxuriant, mouth-coating wave of satiny honey and apricot flavors, balanced by citrusy acidity. Complex, perfectly poised, it’s a wine with both pedigree and charm—delicious when sipped alone or paired with a mild Roquefort or fruit. "

Other Dessert Beyond Port and Sherry, here are a few of our favorites: Sauternes - the golden wine of the Sauternes region in Bordeaux, these wines are made with botrytis-affected Semillon grapes and produce a rich, honeyed concoction with an amazing balance of sweetness and acidity. Don"t discount Sauternes' neighbor, Barsac, or even the region across the river,...
