Rocca delle Macie Campomaccione Morellino di Scansano 2004
Sangiovese
from Tuscany, Italy
winemaker's notes:
90% Sangiovese (aka "morellino"), 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot. In local dialect, Sangiovese has long been known as "morellino" a reference to "morello," a breed of horse formerly used to work on farms in this coastal area of Tuscany. Farmers compared the rich dark color of the sangiovese grape to the glossy, dark coat of the morello horses.
Intense aromas of ripe fruits and floral notes. The palate is smooth, well-structured and harmonious with soft tannins. This versatile red wine is a splendid companion for spicier dishes, all types of grilled, roasted and barbecued red meats and hearty stews.
This fine Morellino di Scansano comes from the prestigious Campomaccione estate in Tuscany's Grosseto province. Starting in the 1990s, the Morellino di Scansano DOC has become the talk of growing numbers of wine critics and connoisseurs, who see in it enormous potential for a new style of world-class wines from Tuscany with their own distinct personality.
