Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon epitomizes the rich character and soft, approachable tannins of the vintage. With the season's long "hang time" the small berries reached the desired state of ripeness where the tannins become very soft and supple. Even in its youth, this Reserve wine has tremendous fruit expression, depth, and a velvety texture. The outstanding natural balance, enhanced by gentle vinification, promises great aging potential. Filet mignon with shiitake mushrooms, accompanied by a gratin of potatoes with white truffle oil, is an excellent pairing. It is also elegant served with a cheese course, such as aged Gouda with toasted almonds.
"The profound 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve boasts a saturated ruby/purple color... Aged in 100% new French oak, this blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot offers a textbook varietal nose of cedar wood, licorice, creme de cassis, and pain grille. Full-bodied, with explosive sweetness and fruit on the attack, this gloriously pure, superbly well-delineated wine should be drinkable young, and last for 3 decades."
Big & Bold
Actually, 3.25 stars. On the nose, the first thing I get is toasted oakiness, which I didn't very much enjoy. It was not too vibrant, but still was easy to pick. There are also some black fruits going on. Blackberry, a hint of blueberry, a hint of black licorice. There is also some heat coming through. There is also a hint of sweet tobacco! Midpalate, it is dry. It is very consistent to what I get on the nose. There are blackberrys and a hint of black licorice going on. Finish, this wine lingers in my mouth. It has a considerably pleasant long finish with some black fruits dancing on my palate and all over my mouth. It also has smooth and polished clean tannins. This is not a full-bodied bottle of wine. I would say medium to full bodied. It is well made and balanced and well put together. Bottled at 13.5%. However, I must disagree with RP (my favorite wine critic) when he scored this 95 pts. I am 91 on this effort. I really liked it. It is a sold bottle of wine, but 95 is way too high for this effort. Happy drinking!
