Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano and 10% Mazuelo aged for 16 months in oak barrels. Ripe, cherry red in color, the nose is long and complex with fragrances of leather, tobacco, balsams and spices. These scents are contributions from the oak barrels used for aging. The palate is warm, well-structured and meaty. The wine is aged 16 months followed by an additional 12 months in bottle prior to release from the winery.

Rioja Vega, Spain
The origins of Rioja Vega date back to 1882 when Don Felipe Ugalde established a bodega bearing his name in Haro. His dream was to produce wines of the highest quality and to make his bodega one of the most prestigious in the country. Located in the Rioja Baja sub-region of the Rioja DOCa, the winery was acquired by Group Principe de Viana in 1983. While the estate is now operating with a new image and personnel, as well as renewed equipment and facilities, the goal is the same: to fulfill Don Felipe’s dream of making Rioja Vega the most prestigious estate in Rioja.

The estate offers three wines, each expressing a great attention to quality and detail, combined with excellent value. Their dedication to quality is seen even in the cooperage used, as they have their own line of oak barrels called Intona. All of the estate’s wines express characteristics of the traditional Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano varietals in the context of Rioja Vega’s modern technology and facility.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
