Winemaker Notes

The mostly old vines that make up our Teldeschi are Zinfandel, Carignane, and Petite Sirah, a mélange typical of older vineyard plantings in California. The three varieties are fermented separately and blended to taste. Native yeast fermentation, small open-top fermenters, manual punching down of the cap, minimal processing, and aging in small French oak cooperage all contribute to a style that brings out the best of the vineyard—power and big flavors. Teldeschi Vineyard is always the highest quality of the Zinfandel vineyards that Ravenswood crushes from the Dry Creek Valley.

The 2007 Teldeschi Zinfandel is richly perfumed with scents of black raspberry, apricot, and aromatic spices. Subtle tobacco flavors mingle with flavors of plum and cherry. Red and dark berries dominate the flavor, where they are joined by the typical Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel characters of vanilla, cherry, and sweet plum-like fruit.

22% Petite Sirah; 2% Carignane. Nicely ripened blackberry first aromas are comfortably filled out by suggestions of red cherries, sweet oak, a touch of caramel and spicy background notes. Full-bodied on the palate with its suppleness running to a bit of flesh, but balanced quite well, this wine tightens up and finds structure figuring prominently in its latter half. Expect four to six years of growth at a minimum. It is made in the classic, sweet-berry, light spice mold of the Dry Creek Valley and is bound to entertain all but the most power hungry Zin fans

Dry and rugged in tannins, this Zin displays a complex array of wild berry, tobacco, cocoa and dusty Asian spice flavors. It’s a little heavy in liqueur-type softness. Calls for barbecue, grilled beef, or even dark chocolate.

From a 30-acre vineyard, where the oldest vines date to 1913, this is a field blend dominated by zinfandel, with carignane and petite sirah; Joel Peterson has been making wine from Teldeschi since the 1970s. In 2007, the vines produced an intense wine, full and complete rather than hyperripe. The fruit has a portobello mushroom tone, the tannins a gravelly edge. It's built to age, or to decant for a grilled rib-eye.

Ravenswood Gary Sitton and Joel Peterson Winery Image

Fueled initially by the inspiration and winemaking skills of Joel Peterson, aided and abetted by his business partner W. Reed Foster, Ravenswood winery has been dedicated to top quality, hand-crafted wine since the first crush in 1976. Every Ravenswood wine carries a unique vintage and vineyard identity in addition to the intense powerful – gothic – character with which the winery has come to be associated.

A key to Ravenswood’s success is their long-standing relationships with over 60 independent grape growers. Vineyards are chosen for their location, age, yield and special flavor characteristics. At Ravenswood, they are devoted to working with growers who share their philosophy about high quality.

Ravenswood Vineyard Designate wines are made employing what Joel Peterson refers to as “stubborn and impractical” Old World enological practices. Wines are fermented in small wooden tanks using wild, natural yeasts and punched down by hand three to five times per day. The wines are characterized by intense, spicy aromas supported by rich, berry flavors and long, clean finishes.
