winemaker's notes:

The Pickberry Vineyard is located on the slopes of Sonoma Mountain on the western side of the Sonoma Valley. Pickberry Vineyard got its name many years ago by then two-year-old Kristin Strotz, daughter of owners Cris and Lorna Strotz, due to the irresistible blackberry vines that grow on the property. Pickberry fruit (in this case grapes, as opposed to blackberries) has traditionally produced opulent, berry-saturated, Bordeaux-style wines and with the 2006 vintage, these indisputable virtues are even more dramatic.

Deep ruby color, expressive aromas of smoky cherry, blackcurrant and baking spices. Suave dark berry flavors show liqueur-like depth and intensity, with dusty tannins adding shape and grip and carrying through the finish.

Blend: 74% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon

alcohol by volume: 14.2%
critical acclaim:

"Quite a noble, interesting wine that bears comparing with the best of Napa Valley. It's bone dry, with softly dusty tannins backed with a firm hit of clean acidity. The flavors are somewhat herbal, with a sage and tobacco edge to the blackberries, dark chocolate and graphite. Feels classy and important, but young. Better after 2012."

Wine Enthusiast

"Deep ruby color. Expressive aromas of smoky cherry, blackcurrant and baking spices. Suave dark berry flavors show liqueur-like depth and intensity, but with no excess weight. This is actually quite elegant, with dusty tannins adding shape and grip and carrying through the finish. Became fresher and more energetic with aeration; I'd hold off on popping one of these for a few years, at least.
Barrel Sample: 92-93 points"

rating (3/4/2011):
Worst case of cork and tannin taste I've ever had in a supposedly unspoiled wine. Ordered three bottles and only tried two. I hope it was something in the storage, etc., because I have always had great success with Wine.com orders. The good news is Wine.com is replacing the three bottles so I will have a chance to see if the wine really rates the high regard that it was touted with. Finally, it is the first bad wine I've had from Ravenswood as well so I am hopeful this was an aberration. I hope my saying I would not buy this wine again proves to be wrong.

Excellent...needs to be room temperature and poured through an aerator. Terrific flavors.
