Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2009 Big River has aromas of ripe fresh plums, baking spice, hints of fennel, oak-spiced roasted nuts and dark berries. Bright, ripe mouth-filling flavors and a long, soft, fruit and oak-driven finish help make this wine a deeply concentrated, sappy, satisfying Zinfandel of great purity and depth.

Critical Acclaim

"Inky purple. Blackberry, Moroccan spices and cracked pepper on the youthfully medicinal nose. Ripe, plush and palate-coating but at the same time surprisingly energetic. This rich, chewy zin shows mounting florality and sweetness. Finishes with very suave, pliant tannins and excellent cling. This big boy could handle the richest meat dishes"

Well balanced with lots of intense flavors. However, there is a lingering prune aftertaste that I can't get by. Not a do over for me.

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...

Learn About Zinfandel

Zinfandel(ZIN-fahn-dell) American Grape Zinfandel the American - or Californian - grape. Although it's not from America (Croatia has been named its origin), it does seem quite at home in the vineyards of California. During Prohibition, many Zinfandel vines survived as the high-yielding grape was popular both for home winemaking and communion wine, which is...
