For over 20 years, Petaluma's Coonawarra has been predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, two of the best varietals from South Australia's renowned Coonawarra region.
The fruit for Coonawarra is sourced from two main sites, the Evans Vineyard and the Sharefarners Vineyard. The average age of vines at Petaluma's Evans and Sharefarmers Vineyards is in excess of 30 years and these hand pruned, close spaced, vertical canopy vines are naturally balanced at modestcrop levels of 5 tonnes/hectare of hand picked fruit.

International Wine Cellar - "Deep, saturated red. Seductively perfumed array of red and dark berry, cherry, anise, tobacco and dried rose scents, along with a sexy vanilla undertone. Midweight bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors pick up dusty tannins with air but maintain sweetness, finishing with an echo of cherry and vanilla. I suspect that this will gain more complexity with age but it's awfully appealing right now."

Located on the Limestone Coast of South Australia, Coonawarra is a pretty flat area, except for the vineyards, which are somewhat elevated. That, along with the proximity to the ocean and clouds that like to hang around, Coonawarra never gets too hot. There is a small strip of soil, about nine miles long and two miles wide, called Terra Rossa, or red soil/earth. It is the coveted place to plant Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon in this small region.
Notable FactsCabernet Sauvignon is actually the grape of choice here. There is a good amount of Shiraz planted as well, and blends of the two are popular, but Cabernet grown in the Terra Rossa shows a sense of place, and the wines are in high demand. The wine is elegant in structure, with prominent acidity and firm tannins, but full of ripe fruit flavors typical of Australia's style.

Alcohol By Volume GuideMost wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume.
