From an exceptionally cool year, superb vineyard selection of the Tempranillo bunches has resulted in one of the most pure and elegant expressions in years. Bright raspberry fruit is underscored by the typically gravelly Pesquera minerality. A long finish includes integrated tannins for near-term enjoyment, well-balanced for many years of bottle evolution.
"The 2007 Crianza (the bottle I saw was labeled Tinto) is crimson-colored with an enticing nose of leather, Asian spices, incense, violets, and blackberry. Smooth-textured, ripe, and concentrated on the palate, it has the structure and balance to evolve for several years and will offer prime drinking from 2013 to 2022.
The Wine Advocate
"Vivid ruby. Youthful, high-pitched aromas of red- and blackcurrant, cherry and fresh rose, with suggestions of baking spices and cured meat adding complexity. Juicy and precise, offering gently sweet red fruit flavors firmed by a zesty mineral spine. Finishes with strong cut and very good precision, repeating the floral note. Alejandro Fernandez told me that he harvested earlier than usual in this vintage, which explains this wine's vivacity."
International Wine Cellar
Original bodega founded in 1972. A living icon of modern Spanish wine, Alejandro Fernández was one of the first in his country to return to biodynamic, low yield viticulture in order to produce concentrated oak-aged red wines capable of extended bottle aging. Currently under vine are 500 acres, almost exclusively Tempranillo, in a range of soil types including a locally-rare gravel deposit. Following development of new wine estates in the 1990's current vintages are of unprecedented quality. The 'Master of the Tempranillo', now at the peak of his career.
