Item No. 111417
ratings pedigree (past vintages):
red wine style:
Light & Fruity Smooth & Supple Earthy & Spicy Big & Bold
winemaker's notes:

The Phoenix name recognizes the first winemaking company purchased by Douglas Tolley in South Australia in 1888, the 'The Phoenix Winemaking and Distilling Company.' The nose consists of violets, black currant leaf, ripe wild berry and integrated spice of the Cabernet grape. Mulberry and blackberry are the dominant fruit flavors enhanced by a tight palate with silky grape tannins and elegant complex cedar oak, so typical of Penley Style. A very generous mid palate with a hints of licorice and chocolate lingers on the finish.

alcohol by volume: 14.5%
critical acclaim:

"Bright crimson; by some distance, the best of the ’09 Penley varietals, with redcurrant and blackcurrant fruit supported by quality cedary oak and fine tannins, the medium-bodied palate long and complete. "

rating (6/9/2012):
Wonderful fruity aroma consisting of raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and cherries. Definitely a strong wine with bold flavor, but extremely pleasant and smooth finish. Small bit of tannins, and pleasantly earthy. Very berry, though. Overall extremely enjoyable. High-ish price takes off a star.

Strong licorice nose and flavor which tempers the fruit flavor so that it's strong but not sweet. Very smooth

Very good, twist cap.
rating (4/23/2012):

I bought several bottles and they went pretty fast. Although the overall value was good I thought it was a bit overrated. 3 and a half stars is about right.

Really nice bold cab that is not overpowered by tannins although they are still there. Took a bit of time to open up but well worth it.
rating (2/11/2012):
This is a great bargain. Very well balanced, structured Cab with enough fruit to drink now, but enough acidity to last and drinks well with beef, especially grilled.
Style:Earthy & Spicy

Not my kind of Cab. Wasn't bad but not what I was hoping for at the time.

This wine to me was overrated. JH seems to always overrate wine compared to other critics. I brought two bottles first bottle wasn't as good as 2nd bottle. It's all a matter to personal taste and your taste buds. I would of rated this wine a 88.

rating (9/27/2011):
We tasted this with a big California Cab... this wine won. Something about how smooth and supple it is on the palate, combined with the ripe fruit and sweet herbal notes (eucalyptus anyone?) make it just plain delicious. Light enough to pair well with food (particularly anything with herbs on it - rosemary, thyme, etc), but balanced enough to hold up on its own, too. Great stuff.
Style:Smooth & Supple
rating (9/16/2011):
the mulberry and blackberry dominate, not very much peppery flavor at all, pretty smooth overall, if you like a smooth fruit flavored cabernet this is a good pick
