Penley Estate Hyland Shiraz 2004
Syrah/Shiraz
from Coonawarra, Australia
winemaker's notes:
Number 10 on the Wine.com 100 of 2007!
An impressive value, the 2004 Hyland Shiraz has received 90+ ratings from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Steven Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, respected Australian wine critic James Halliday and Wines & Spirits. With endorsements like that, its hard to go wrong!
Heritage has always been important to Penley Estate; the name of this wine recognizes the historical connections to family – one of Australia’s forefathers of winemaking – Penfold Hyland.
The color is crimson, but will develop some amber tints from its oak maturation and later bottle age. The aroma is varietal with a complex of berry ripeness with huge intensity reflecting the vintage conditions. Strong lifted aromas of variety and oak. The flavor is rich and fruity. A soft and rich middle palate along with oak tannin on the finish balance the fruit flavors.
"Exhibiting sensational richness and purity, the full-bodied 2004 Shiraz Hyland possesses toasty new oak, blackberry, black currant, raspberry, and cherry characteristics. Layered, deep, medium to full-bodied, and elegant, this 2004 should drink beautifully for a decade or more."

I am a newbie to wine, so I won't be able to talk about tannis, etc, but this was great, simply great.
