    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

Dense, deep red color with a purple core and vibrant ruby rim. The nose is dominated by appealing Cabernet Sauvignon varietal characters, with telltale notes of blackcurrant, capsicum and mint. Merlot adds a plummy richness at the back, whilst the oak conveys a spicy warmth to the background aromatics. Dark cherry and blackcurrant flavours dominate the palate, with beetroot and some leafy notes, set against a savoury backdrop of understated oak. The wine has a tight structure, with excellent grip, definition and length, showing ripe tannins and abundant varietal flavour. Drinking well now but showing promise of medium term aging capability.

    Penfolds Wines, Australia
    Penfolds Wines Winery Video

Penfolds has been producing remarkable wines since 1844 and indisputably led the development of Australian fine wine in the modern era. The introduction of Penfolds Grange in 1951 forever changed the landscape of Australian fine wine. Since then a series of stand-out wines both white and red have been released under the Penfolds masthead.

Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker and only the 4th custodian of Grange, relishes the opportunity to bring Penfolds to the world stage and is an enthusiastic ambassador and natural educator. Penfolds came to the attention of the US market when 1990 Grange was Wine Spectator’s ‘Wine of the Year’. Since then, Penfolds Grange has become one of the most collectable wines of the world and was honored to grace the front cover, once again, of Wine Spectator, with declarations of Grange as Australia’s Icon.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.
