winemaker's notes:
Deep color. The nose is very concentrated, super-ripe wine with blackcurrant pastille, mulberry, liquorice, aniseed aromas. The palate is rich and fleshy with plenty of sweetfruit, mocha oak and generous blackcurrant, mulberry, licquorice flavours. this is a fairly robust style; the dense, velvety tannins build up very sinewy and grippy at the finish.

Consistently delicious wine. We were turned onto this by Kevin Zraley at the Windows on the World wine school in the 80's when Australian reds were still cheap. Never failed us yet for compliments way exceeding it's price with Grilled Lamb or Steak. The 2001 is as good as all the rest

Bin 389 is typical of a quality Penfolds product, consistent from year to year, a standard by that you can rely on. It has many of the classic CabSav/Shiraz hallmarks, fruity berries, plums etc. But this vintage, at the time I tasted it was lacking the full heartiness I was used to, less of the blackberry and pepper hints. The tannin edge was a little sharper, overpowering the more subtle fruit and prune notes. Regardless, add a fine 12 ounce steak to the plate and you have perfect combination of fine Australian wine making, and the best your BBQ can produce! Still a favourite.
