winemaker's notes:
This juicy and rich wine is a dark, deep, plum red color in the glass. The nose is a combination of sweet aromas - ripe plum fruits, blackcurrants and liquorice. Some freshly-tanned leather, a touch of cinnamon and clove spices. On the palate, there are baked fruit cake flavors, with some ripe blackcurrant tones. Savory, meaty flavors combine with crisp natural acidity and defined tannins.
Penfolds Bin 2, first vintage 1960, was the result of experimental work by Penfolds winemakers to create a medium-bodied, soft-finishing "Australian Burgundy" style, based on Shiraz. Mourvedre grapes were added to soften the Shiraz's intense varietal characters.
Bin 2 reflects Penfolds' multi-region, multi-vineyard blending policy, which enables winemakers to reduce the impact of vintage variation and produce consistent wines every vintage.

we tried the 1999 Shiraz-Mourve'dre. We drank as an after dinner wine and found it extremely enjoyable. I am still new to the wine world and all of it's terms and techniques...but I can tell this is a keeper. I believe it would go excellent with a "meaty" meal - beef or pork. It is a wonderful wine.

We tried the 1998: Dark ruby hue. Rich and "chewy", black cherry fruit flavors with soft vanilla. Long finish with mild tannins. We had it with rare lamb chops w/feta, great match. It's unfiltered and a good candidate for decanting. We left it on its side, and although there were no floating particulates, there was a "crust" on the side of the bottle. I give it an 89.
