Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz 1995
Syrah/Shiraz
from Coonawarra, Australia
winemaker's notes:
Penfolds Bin 128 is one of the most distinctive reds in the Penfolds
stable. Firstly, as a 'Coonawarra Shiraz', it is one of the few
Penfolds reds that isn't a multi regional blend. It is also one of
only two Penfolds reds, Clare Estate being the other, to be matured
solely in French oak. French oak generally lends a wine
understated, aromatic characters and is therefore a better choice
with more subtly flavoured wines. Coonawarra typically produces
zesty, spicy and supple Shiraz fruit that exhibits a richness of
flavour and a mouth-filling roundness on the palate. Bin 128 is
true to this style.
The 1995 vintage is a brick red color and contains a complex amalgam of aromas including
raspberry, kirsch, chocolate, leather, and
restrained, cedar-like French oak.
The palate is soft and approachable with sweet fruit characters
complexed by white pepper and green peppercorn
nuances. Subtle, vanillin oak pleasantly
completes the picture.
This wine pairs nicely with duck, game and lamb.
critical acclaim:
"Dark red-ruby. Black raspberry, coffee, and chocolate on the nose; showed framboise and fresh herbal notes with aeration. Juicy, spicy and supple, with enticing inner-mouth perfume and a mineral nuance. Solid acidity gives the fruit good clarity. Finishes bright and firm, with fine-grained tannins. Excellent value; very successful for this bottling."
