winemaker's notes:

75% Merlot , 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot.

Wonderful intensity of fruit, with a vivid array of black currant, cocoa, violet and smoky aromas that lead to a full-bodied mid-palate marked by ripe blackberry flavors. Rich and complex, yet pure and focused, with supple tannins that provide a silky and prolonged finish.

alcohol by volume: 14.7%
critical acclaim:

"The 2007 Pedestal Merlot is the project of Michel Rolland. This latest release is composed of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot aged for 20 months in 80% new French oak. It reveals a fragrant nose of sandalwood, incense, sage, cinnamon, black cherry, and black currant. Elegant on the palate despite its ample size, it is loaded with succulent fruit set off by enough ripe tannin to support an additional 3-4 years of cellaring. It will deliver prime drinking from 2013 to 2027."

The Wine Advocate

"Aromatically pure and focused, brimming with currant, blackberry and currant fruit shaded with white pepper and allspice. Hints at wet earth as the finish persists. It seems like this can go on for a long time in the cellar. Drink now through 2017."

Wine Spectator

"The ripeness and heat are immediately noticeable in the liquorous nose. Supple and smooth in the mouth, it shows a blend of pretty purple fruits and polished tannins, layered with barrel flavors emphasizing espresso and strong toast. Classic Michel Rolland, inviting and generous."

Wine Enthusiast

" Sweet aromas of raspberry, redcurrant and flowers. Plump, ripe and dry, with a pliant, layered texture to the flavors of raspberry, chocolate, tobacco and loam. Very merlot. I like the combination of sweet mid-palate fruit and the classically dry, broad finish."

rating (2/14/2013):
We have this wine for the purpose of cellar variety. It is priced at the maximum they can ask for wine of this quality. A little tannin, nice acididity...not just a smooth Merlot; an interesting 'nice' wine. A bargin, this wine is not.
