Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

From its dense, saturated ruby hue to its earthy, cigar box nose, this cabernet sauvignon commands attention and suggests a cellar-worthy wine. More than evident on the palate right now is the great intensity, depth and structure it possesses. Pure, focused flavors of black cherry, currant and tobacco coat the mouth, while notes of forest floor and pencil shavings add further dimension and nuance. A lingering finish offers balanced acidity and firm, chewy tannins. Alcohol 15.1%

Varietal Composition: 98% Cabernet Sauvignon & 2% Cabernet Franc

Dense, rich and savory, with earthy hazelnut, dried currant, black cherry and blackberry fruit that slowly unfolds to reveal extra facets of spice, berry, fresh-cut flowers and sage. Returns to the fruit theme on the finish. Best from 2010 through 2017. 525 cases made.

As usual, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard is more primordial and broodingly backward than its siblings. It offers notes of charcoal and earthy black currants, high tannins, and a full-bodied, powerful personality. While filled with purity and depth, it will need time in the bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025.

Strongly scented with cassis and blackberries and showing a distinct streak of minerals and dark soils in the nose, this fat and full-bodied working is biased just a bit to ripeness in the mouth with deep flavors that play juicy fruit against lots of sweet oak. Arguably a touch hot and showing just a touch of the narrowness that marks many wines of the vintage, it ends with a long and very flavorful finish, and it should hit its best within a half-dozen years.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
