Winemaker's Notes

This vineyard yields fragrant, tropical aromatics underscored by a crisp mineral character. Look for fresh tastes of Gravenstein apple and exotic fruit flavors of passion fruit and guava. Produced from some of the oldest plantings of Chardonnay in western Sonoma County, this wine is a blend of California heritage clones- Robert Young, Rued, Hyde-Wente and UC Davis clone 4. Mostly dry-farmed, the vines struggle to produce small but intensely concentrated berries, making for great depth of flavor and texture.

One of our finest incarnations of the Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Chardonnay to date, this bright, enticing wine benefits from the addition of old-vine Wente selection fruit from the Dutton's Walker Hill block located in the cool climate of the Green Valley. From its wonderfully effusive aromas of stone fruit, green apple and narcissus to its pure fruit flavors of pineapple, peach and spicy pear, this Chardonnay offers an intricate, plush, creamy palate and a long, textured finish that combines finesse with dense, structured acidity.

Critical Acclaim

"A lush Chardonnay marked by integrated balance of all parts, resulting in great harmony. It’s very ripe in tropical fruits and quite oaky and leesy, but like the powerful gymnasts in Cirque du Soleil, all the performers work together as a troupe. Drink with rich, fancy fare, like lobster or scallops."

"Pale medium yellow. Stony, floral nose hints at spices and tropical fruits. Quite perfumed and precise in the mouth, with a subtle saline character adding nuance to the bright flavors of lemon, pineapple and spices; showed a floral fragrance that reminded me of riesling, or muscat. The firm, harmonious acids really frame the wine and carry the fruit. Finishes bright, strong and long. "
92 Points

"Aromas of smoky, buttered hazelnuts, nectarines, and orange blossom emerge from the 2006 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch. With medium to full body, and good acidity as well as freshness, this Meursault-like white should drink nicely for 3-4 years. One of the most impressive Burgundian-styled negociant operations in California, the quartet of Donald and Heather Patz, James Hall, and Anne Moses continues to fine tune and improve what were already top-notch wines. "
91 Points

"Pale gold hue. Shy bouquet with hints of citrus peel and new oak. Compact, youthful flavors of peach and oak with flinty mineral accents. A slow-to-unfold, promising Chard that will continue to improve."
