Actually, 3.75 stars. This is indeed one of the best Merlots I have had in this price range. However, Pahlmeyer Merlot 2004 is very fruit-forward, so if you are an old-world wine drinker, you might not find it very special. On the nose, the first thing that hits me is very ripe black fruits, plum, a hint of mild spices, a little hint of vanilla. Smooth tannins, medium-bodied. On the midpalate, you get licorice, ripe black fruits. This wine impresses me quite a bit, given the fact you pay $70. I would buy it again and would recommend it to a friend. One last very important thing, do not be a shallow person and say I do not drink Merlot because of Sideways. This is very insane. I know you are not a shallow person! Happy drinking! I am 91 on this effort. RP is 90.
