Style: Smooth & Supple

Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Bright cherry-red in color with light purple tones. The aroma is very elegant and lively aromas, rich and complex. Fresh, fruity notes (black fruits, raspberry, dark sherry), nicely integrated with spices, tobacco & toasted aromas (vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon). The palate has a silky texture, concentrated, well structured and very elegant. The finish is long and complex, with spices, tobacco, raspberries and blackberries notes.

100% Tinta de Toro

Critical Acclaim

"This bold red matches ripe blackberry and currant flavors with toast, dark chocolate and oak notes. The tannins are firm and well-integrated, and the smoky mineral note is alluring. Drink now through 2016."
91 Points

"Opaque ruby. Sexy, oak-spiced dark berries and fresh flowers on the nose, along with notes of cola and star anise. Lush, palate-coating blackberry and candied cherry flavors are lifted by tangy acidity and gain sweetness with air. Fine-grained tannins add shape to the lush fruit flavors and carry through a long, spicy finish. Give this a bit of air if you plan to open it any time soon."

The Termes Tinta de Toro is a huge wine in every way imaginable. With its deep ruby color and heavy tannins, this bottle has the potential to age well for several more years. On the nose you will find copious amounts of black cherries, raspberries, blackberries and mocha. There are also quite a few spices like clove and star anise. I like this wine and think it is an exceptional value at $28, but I would caution not to expect a typical Tempranillo style of wine even though they are cousins. In fact, if big Spanish Garnache or Rhone Valley Grenache-based wines are your style, give this Termes a try one evening. I think it will please the palate. Food Pairing Suggestions: I think you need to go big or go home with a beast of a wine like this Termes. A traditional Bolognese sauce would be an excellent accompaniment. I could also see an oxtail ragout working nicely, assuming it was not overly spicy but rather more aromatic in its preparation. I also like the idea of some well flavored classic crock pot dishes like Salisbury steak or Swiss steak with buttered noodles.
