Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

C.C. Ranch has a unique combination of floral and fruit, and this 2009 vintage continues to show this trademark. Plush cherry flavors are enhanced by floral characteristics that add dimension. The distinctive "Rutherford Dust" combined with spice and toast from the oak deepens its flavor and complexity. Smooth and rich, this wine expands on the middle palate, and the soft tannins that are associated with the Rutherford appellation melt away into a long, harmonious finish.

Critical Acclaim

"A 15-acre selection from this 115-acre vineyard on a knoll west of the Silverado Trail, this wine has a supple Rutherford richness. The red fruit brings apple skin and plums to mind, lending elegance to the texture, carrying through a firmly stated finish. There's nothing aggressive about it: a lively cabernet with finesse."

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon C.C. Ranch Vineyard comes across as dark, brooding and totally unyielding. Scorched earth, tar, licorice and dark fruit all emerge from this muscular Cabernet Sauvignon. There is good intensity in the glass, but the tannins aren't quite as polished as they are in the other wines in this lineup. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

"Bright, medium red-ruby. Black cherry, licorice and a minty nuance on the nose. Dense and seamless but with a firm spine of acidity and a floral note giving a light touch to the flavors of dark berries and licorice. Not a thick wine but boasts excellent definition. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and plenty of energy. This needs time to knit.
Rating: 91(+?)"

"There's a touch of smoke woven through the rich currant and black berry flavors, and this ends with tar and licorice notes and a crushed rock texture. Shows a little more body and texture than the other Nickel & Nickel 2009s. Drink now through 2024."

Learn About Napa Valley

It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
