Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 10% Petit Verdot, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc.

This supple Bordeaux blend was created by the legendary Mike Dobrovic as a tribute to Boes ("Bushy" in Afrikaans), the loyal dog who kept watch over Mulderbosch farm for nearly three years after his owner's death, waiting beneath an oak tree for the return of his beloved master. Enticing aromas of blackcurrant, mulberry, coffee, and spice lead to intense flavors of ripe plum, blackberry, and licorice enhanced by signature Bordeaux notes of tobacco, forest floor and graphite.

Critical Acclaim

"Dark red. Currant, blackberry and licorice aromas lifted by a leafy quality. Suave, silky and light on its feet, with redcurrant and menthol flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Gentle and easy to drink now but has the energy to age. The savory finish features smooth tannins."

I first tried this blend while visiting my son and daughter-in-law in Pittsburgh. I was immediately smitten. This full bodied delight is great with anything (yes, even pizza) and has an excellent, flavorful finish... Well worth the price. I bought 6 to cellar but couldn't wait to sample it... so, I tore through one immediately and gave one as a gift to a special friend...

Was thinking of giving this 1 star due to the almost overwhelming green bell pepper taste (I don't exactly like my wine to taste of vegetables), but it did grow on me a little bit as it opened up while I had it with cheese and crackers. It's different, at least. edit--back to 1 star, dumped half the bottle on 2nd night (vacu vin'd from night 1) due to the 'green pepper explosion'. Yuck.

Learn About South Africa

South Africa A long history of growing grapes and making wine, but less of a history on exporting it, and even lesser on the quality aspect. At the turn of the century (1900, that is), a surplus of wine in South Africa created a hierarchy of cooperatives, the biggest and best known being KWV. This organization seemed to favor quantity over quality and had most...
