Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

"The Gaffer" 2010 Shiraz is a testament to the best of McLaren Vale. Made with 30% new French oak, this wine shows excellent integration of Shiraz fruit with the gentle use of oak creating a big, rich, juicy, smooth style of red, finishing with elegance and spice. "The Gaffer" is a flavorsome, fruit-driven, full-bodied Shiraz that is well balanced and assured to please the palate... with a touch of PINK!

Critical Acclaim

"Glass-staining purple. Blackberry, licorice and smoky Indian spices on the nose. Juicy and lithe, with vibrant flavors of black fruits and cracked pepper. This energetic, tightly wound shiraz finishes with very good clarity and spicy persistence. This was aged in one-third new French oak but I don't sense it."
91 Points

"Aged for 12 months in French oak, 30% new, the 2010 'The Gaffer' Shiraz has a very deep garnet-purple color and pronounced black fruits, black currant and mocha nose with hints of bacon, cinnamon stick and loam. Full bodied and richly fruited in the mouth, it is well balanced by crisp acid and a medium level of velvety tannins, finishing long and savory. Drink it now to 2017."
