Alcohol By Volume: 14.8%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Of intense ruby red color, it has enchanting floral aromas accompanied by tobacco and leathery notes. On the mouth, it's powerful and full-bodied to the palate, with soft and mature tannins and a very long and elegant finish.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2009 Alpha Syrah contains 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Viognier. It spent 12 months in French oak. The aromatics receive a pleasing lift from the Viognier component in addition to notes of meat, game, lavender, and blueberry. Rich, layered, and long, this pleasure-bent Syrah has the structure to evolve for another 2-3 years and will be at its best from 2013 to 2021."

Learn About Chile

(CHEE-lay) Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

Learn About Syrah/Shiraz

(seh-RAH/shee-RAHZ) It's a Smokin' Grape Syrah and Shiraz - same grape, different name. It's a popular and adept variety, growing in multiple regions and creating many different styles of wine. The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
