Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Aged for 12 months in French oak. Intense ruby in color with red fruits evocations of blackcurrant, chocolate and cigar box, in balance with well integrated oak. Of great complexity in the mouth, in mid palate is full bodied and balanced with a lasting persistence and a remarkable finish. Although a superb wine as it is, it may also be considered as a great wine for cellaring.

Decant at least 30 minutes, preferably one hour.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2007 Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon raises the bar considerably. A glass-coating opaque purple, it has an excellent bouquet of toasty oak, tobacco, espresso, and blackcurrant. With good richness, excellent depth, and a firm structure, it will evolve for several years and drink well through 2019. Aurelio Montes remains one of Chile's great innovators and quality leaders. His latest releases are first class from entry level to the top of the portfolio."

I really have enjoyed this so far, but I think it needs to age. I bought a case and had maybe 3 bottle so far. I've had it with steaks and it doesn't support the beef yet- just a little too thin. Not chewy or thick enough. We have enjoyed it with freinds late at night on the deck in a heat wave, and they loved it. I think it's better with just cheese/crackers etc.

This is one of my favorite wines. Served it at dinner with friends recently. After a few sips, they said We don't usually like Cabs, but this is really nice! The taste is silky and full bodied.

With the release of the first Montes Alpha wine back in 1988, Montes became one of the first premium wineries of Chile. Their premise, a clear belief that Chile had an untapped potential as a producer of quality wines, made them a benchmark for other wineries to follow. Its original four partners' total involvement and the continuous help of the angels that decorate their labels...

Learn About Chile

(CHEE-lay) Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
