Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Packed with varied and complex mineral/fruit elements expressed in a decidedly sauvage style, its extract literally clinging to the sides of the glass. Balance and complexity prevail in a generally sensational taste experience.

Blend: 96% Tempranillo, 3% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon

Critical Acclaim

"The 2007 Montecastro exhibits more spice and a bit more density. Savory, forward, and incipiently complex, it can be approached now but will reward another 2-3 years of cellaring. The pleasure-bent effort will be at its best from 2013 to 2022."
91 Points

"This is dark and tarry at first, with aromas of freshly laid asphalt, pepper, fine herbs, burnt toast and roasted berry. This feels racy, healthy and balanced, with a creamy quality to the palate. It tastes natural and correct, with plum, berry, vanilla and spice flavors. On the finish, it's smooth with a strong oak-based vanilla flavor. Cellar Selection."
