Mollydooker Velvet Glove Shiraz 2006
Syrah/Shiraz from South Australia, Australia
"Aptly named, this wine expresses our passion in winemaking. It has the most beautiful and captivating nose that explodes out of the glass with notes of chocolate, espresso, blackcurrant and spice. The awesome velvety sensation, which coats your tongue like a glove, is what makes this wine stand out. Stunningly complete and complex, with amazing beauty and power, it exemplifies our craft at its best.
Each amazing bottle comes wrapped in a custom black velvet bag, made from the same imported French velvet we used to create the label itself. The shape of the bottle and the black velvet details printed with silver foil are all in place to make our Velvet Glove Shiraz an amazing experience even before you open the bottle!
We measure a wine's quality on the Marquis Fruit Weight™ scale. For a wine to be included in Velvet Glove, it must score 95% or above. To score this highly, the grapes must come from a very special vineyard, must be grown according to the Marquis Vineyard Watering Programme, and then must have that blessing from above – a favorable growing season.
In 2006 we were lucky enough to have all three, the magical Gateway Vineyard, Toby Bekkers (McLaren Vale Viticulturalist of the Year) and Daniel Libovich looking after the watering, and the weather on our side.
We have, in the past, had 4 wines which have scored 99 points from Robert Parker Jr. In our Mollydooker grading tastings we rate this wine higher. The Mollydooker 2006 Velvet Glove is quite simply the best wine we have ever made."
- Winemaker Sparky Marquis
"Rich, ripe and harmoniously balanced, this is dense with blackberry, plum, licorice, cream and spice flavors that don't quit as the finish sails on and on. Has tremendous presence, yet remains supple through the expressive finish. Drink now through 2020."
Mollydooker (Aussie for left-hander) Wines was established in 2005 by Sarah and Sparky Marquis. Five of their wines have been chosen in the Wine Spectator's "Top 100," and their Carnival of Love Shiraz has made the "Top 100" twice. The winery is on the prime Seaview Ridge in McLaren Vale, South Australia, and the vines are grown according to the Marquis Vineyard Watering Programme to give the grapes the rich flavors that distinguish Mollydooker's wines. Mollydooker makes Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot and Verdelho. The Velvet Glove Shiraz, with 95%+ Marquis Fruit Weight is superbly complete and complex, with stunny beauty and power. View all Mollydooker WinesLike the United States, which is about the same size, Australia's winemaking regions are huddled into one or two pockets of the country. The state of South Australia, which produces about 60% of the country's wine, also has the most wineries and sub-regions, including McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Coonawarra and Barossa Valley. New South Wales is home to the Hunter Valley, while the smaller, southern state of Victoria is best known for theYarra Valley. Head way west to the very large state of Western Australia and you'll find the tiny region of Margaret River at the southern tip.

Alcohol By Volume GuideMost wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.
