Meridian Santa Barbara Chardonnay 1998
Chardonnay
from Central Coast, California
winemaker's notes:
The Santa Barbara Chardonnay was barrel fermented in French and American oak barrels. The wine was aged "sur lie" for seven months and stirred monthly. "By circulating the lees, I'm adding a soft, creamy dimension to the wine. Each time the yeast cells are stirred up, the texture of the wine evolves, resulting in the silky mouthfeel I'm trying to achieve." Chuck allowed 80% of the wine to go through malolactic fermentation. Excellent food pairings with Meridian Vineyards' Santa Barbara County Chardonnay include poultry, fish, pork, cream sauces, and mildly spicy foods.

A very nice moderately complex chardonnay which pairs nicely with many dishes. I find myself coming back for often; one would be hard-pressed to find a more consistent performer for the price than Meridian.

One dimensional and forward, I didn't like this one. I seek a little more complexity in
a Chardonnay and this Meridian '98 was a bit too simple for me. If you like your white wine
without much mystery... this is a good pick, but if you want
more to wrap your tongue around, look elsewhere.

Ahh, springtime and chilled wine. Nothing better! This chardonney is not as fruity as some and pretty dry. Just the way I like them. If you are into less sweet chards, go for this one. Whispy hints of cactus fruit that disappear like a good sparkling wine. For drinking with snack foods or simply "straight" with just good conversation. Yummy!
