Masi Campofiorin Rosso del Veronese IGT 2003
Red Wine
from Veneto, Italy
winemaker's notes:
Deep ruby colour, with a purple touch on the rim. The perfumes are very clean, with ripe fruit, raisins and spicy aromas, mainly cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is round and offers complex aromas of ripe red fruits and berry-fruit preserve. The good acidity and soft tannins gives the wine its easy drinking style.
This specialty of Masi, resulting from the refermentation of wine from fresh Veronese red grapes with a percentage of semi-dried grapes of the same varietals, splendidly encompasses the qualities of the Verona area: the excellence of the zone, the highly individual style of the indigenous Veronese grape varieties, and the originality of the techniques of
"appassimento" (semi-drying) and double fermentation by Masi. It combines simplicity and grace with power and majesty.
Blend: 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 5% Molinara

Two words: Liquid Velvet. This wine is dynamic and smooth. Beautiful dried fruit aromas and flavors, some exotic spices (clove, cinnamon, mase)...like a trail mix for the spice rout to india. Looooong finish, rich dark color. Little bit of chocolate, mocha latte flavor profile, with huge juicy raisins and prunes and gobs of jam. worth it.

I found this to be a devishly enjoyable wine, with its rich color and exotically spicy nose (bits of currant, cinnamon, cloves) then a flood of dried red fruits and layers of earthiness on the soft, yet lingering finish. This wine avoided death on the palate, lingering for minutes. Superb. Like a close cousin of Amarone.
