Luce 2006 is a dense, dark purple. The nose is rich in aromatics
that privilege red berry fruit, dried plum, and blackberry, followed
closely by pungent balsam and sweet notes of vanilla and, at the
conclusion, by dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, pencil lead, and black
liquorice. The palate is alcoholically warm, velvety smooth, and
intense, with elegant tannins well supported by an emphatic vein
of acidity. The finish is lengthy and harmonious.
"Very pretty aromas of cherry pie, blackberry and spices follow through to a full body, with clean, velvety tannins and a delicious, fruity finish. Turns chewy and powerful. Already hard to resist. Merlot and Sangiovese. Best after 2010."
"We are extremely impressed with this vintage of Luce (made by Frescobaldi and Mondavi in Montalcino, Tuscany). The blend of Merlot and Sangiovese is amazingly modern, pleasurable and penetrating with a huge focus on black cherry and chocolate fudge aromas. The tannins are tight and focused and the wine could use another five years of cellaring."
"Based in Montalcino, Luce della Vite began as a joint venture between the Frescobaldi and Mondavi families, now owned by the former. Luce, the flagship wine is a blend of sangiovese with merlot, one that works particularly well in the 2006 vintage. It has the bright, spicy cracked peppercorn scent of Montalcino's top sangiovese, blanced by the dark plum flesh of the merlot. It feels fresh and elegant, even as most of the flavor is still locked in the tannin, where plum-skin detail builds on the complexity of the wine. A mouthwatering match for grilled lamb, this is still youthfully tannic and will benefit from cellar time."
