Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This is rich with aromas of cherry, clove, spice and earth. Robust and full-bodied, our 2009 Monte Rosso Cabernet has juicy red fruit flavors and hints of leather, sweet herbs and spice. Oak aging imparts well-integrated nuances of cedar, caramel and brown spice.

Professional Ratings

Tasted from barrel, the 2009 is composed of 98.8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1.2% Petite Sirah aged in 85% new French and 15% American oak. It came in at 14.5% alcohol, less than the 2008 and 2007 as this was a cooler vintage. Production was only 520 cases. Tightly knit both aromatically and flavor-wise, this medium to full-bodied offering reveals an opaque ruby/purple color as well as notions of black currants, spring flowers, vanillin and toast. With excellent concentration and a long finish, it should be another outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon from the Monte Rosso Vineyard, but it will not be comparable to the all-time greats produced in 2007, 2005, 2001 and 1997. Anticipated Maturity: 2015-2025.
    Range: 91-94+

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
