winemaker's notes:
The color is a brilliant green straw. The fresh nose is classic Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay, with intensely lifted aromas of ripe yellow pear skins, the petals of citrus blossom, nectarine and ripe peach accompanied by hints of fig and cashews from barrel maturation on yeast lees with integrated charry French oak. These flavours combine into a finely balanced bouquet; the result of very low yielding vines matched with subtle winemaking to preserve the richness of the fruit.
The palate displays the mouth filling and intense flavors of fresh ripe pears which is full bodied and incredibly rich, intermingling with delicious stone fruit flavors and nectarine. The middle palate shows richness from both the fruit and the lees stirring, with a lingering fresh citrus finish. The new French oak complements the fruit, providing a wonderful balance of warm toasty flavors on the finish.
The structure of this wine highlights both the power of a typical multi-layered Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay with an underlying elegance.
critical acclaim:
"Deep, bright gold. A complex bouquet offers ripe, smoky tangerine, candied ginger, honey, anise and nutmeg. Weighty orchard fruit flavors firm up with air, taking on candied lemon, lime and pear skin character. The spiciness builds and carries into an impressively broad, clinging finish. Leaves vibrant citrus and mineral notes behind, eventually. Recently tasted bottles of this wine going back to the 1987 showed no sign of decline, and in fact were almost shockingly youthful. "

International Wine Cellar
"Round, generous and amazingly fresh, with a juicy hint of grapefruit playing against spicy pear, green guava and mint aromas and flavors that expand and persist onto the long, expressive finish. This just doesn't quit, remaining exquisitely balanced. Drink now through 2017."

Wine Spectator
"A little mute to begin of the nose but soon opens out to some very pretty floral and tropical fruit aromas: jasmine, pineapple, guava and some spicy oak plus faint hints of chalk dust and white pepper, with some coaxing. The palate is rich and ripe with a full body of concentrated fruit, and a decent backbone of medium to high acidity to balance. Long tropical finish. Drink now to 2015. Tasted February 2009."

The Wine Advocate
"This is the most pure bred and aristocratic of all Australian chardonnays. It has awesome power, grace, depth and finesse; pure grapefruit, nectarine and peach-flesh aromas are framed by complex, toasty, grilled nuts; the palate is amazingly concentrated, yet portrays a lightness that is completely beguiling and incredibly long."
