winemaker's notes:

Made from Tinta Negra Mole grapes collected from multiple small, terraced vineyards that cling to the steep mountainous slopes of the island, this is a medium-dry wine combining soft fruit flavors with a dry, nutty quality. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks until a neutral grape spirit brandy is added to stop the fermentation. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes a heating process, estufagem, where it is placed in cask in a special lodge or estufa where it will remain for at least three months. This heating process oxidizes the wine, giving it a very long shelf life and its characteristic nutty, rich flavors.

alcohol by volume: 18.0%
critical acclaim:

"Delicious, smoky style, with a good balance to the off-dry caramel and butter cream flavors and the ripe melon, apricot and tropical fruit elements"

Tasty blend, not too sweet, not too heavy, with the unmistakable flavor of Malvasia grapes. A taste of sunshine for any hour of the day.

rating (5/10/2011):
This madiera is inexpensive and delicious. Europeans look down their noses at the “Rainwater” style of Madeira, but what do they know? If you buy this, be prepared for the heavier and concentrated flavor of this dryer fortified wine. This stuff also has the advantage of staying fresh for months in your fridge. A 200 year old bottle that was once owned by Thomas Jefferson was opened a few years ago and was still drinkable.
rating (4/30/2011):

I was disappointed with this wine. It needed to be chilled more than it probably should for it to taste decent to me. It had an interesting mix of sweetness and earthiness to it. I did not particularly enjoy the earthiness, but I know some people do like it. I would not buy it for myself again, but someone that enjoys coastal Iberian wines with earthy/salty flavors may like it.
rating (10/23/2010):
An excellent choice as an aperitif or for the "Elevens" AM or PM. Served chilled and enjoy. May also accompany Tapas.

acquired taste but it grows on you
