Fragrant aromas of graphite, damp earth, Asian spices, and black raspberry lead to a complex, sweetly-fruited, savory offering that is an outstanding value.
"From vineyards planted in pure granite soils, the 2011 A Portela is an amazing, unoaked, naturally made 100% Mencia. Opulently styled with copious notes of blueberry liqueur, crushed rocks, spring flowers and a hint of camphor, it exhibits fabulous intensity, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, superb ripeness and an ethereal lightness in spite of its intensity and richness. This stunning effort from Jose Luis Murcia."
The Wine Advocate
Big & Bold
This is a hearty, rich, extracted wine that won't likely win over non -brett fans. Nose of black and blue jammed fruit with soil-drenched dark sawdust. Comes off a bit hotter than the 13.5% would suggest, but provides ample acidity in its dusty blackberry pie palate. Subtle tannins follow through to a burnt cocoa powder finish. Solid and intriguing. 90.
I had high hopes but this wine but I found it was awful! RP seems to be off the mark on some Spanish wines.
