Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2006 Ladera Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is as deep and dark in color as it is in aroma and flavors. The nose on this wine is floral and smoky with rich blackberry aromas. The entry is elegant and soft with flavors of dark cherries, blueberry, cocoa, and spiced plum. The palate is layered with well structured tannins which lead to a long and complex finish of dark currant.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Critical Acclaim

"A tour de force Cabernet. Dense, plush, rich and concentrated, wall-to-wall flavors, with layers of black cherry, black currant, black licorice, mineral and graphite. Full-bodied and tightly wound with firm tannins, yet finishes with a mix of juicy berry and mineral flavors. Drink now through 2020. 3,000 cases made."
94 Points

"In 2000 Pat and Ann Stotsbery bought the Chateau Woltner property and replanted it to Cabernet Sauvignon. The carefully tended young vines and gentle handling of a gravity flow winery make it pretty, while the altitude and soils of the site give it Howell Mountain heft and minerality. One of our tasters, who used to live in Angewin, responded immediately to the wine: "It tastes like the blackberries that grow in the thickets on Howell Mountain," he said. It's dramatic black juice with its fair share of alcohol, an earth '06 with the potential to charm. For the cellar."
94 Points

"The star of this duo is the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain, which offers up juicy notes of crushed rocks, flowers, dark berries, black currants, and earth. This elegant, medium to full-bodied Cabernet possesses both finesse and substance. Deep, pure, and rich with moderate tannins, it will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following 15 years."

Full-bodied Howell Mountain Cab; however, definitely needs more time to open up. Black currant, oak, vanilla, spices and cherry on the nose; Zesty cranberry, black currants, black cherries and berries on the palate. Decanted for 3 hours ... became somewhat smoother and displayed more ripe fruit. Good structure, firm tannins, but slightly astringent; Lengthy yet tightly wound finish. This wine will definitely age well for 5+ years. Not a wine to drink alone - Definitely better with food.. preferably a nice Ribeye.

5 stars. Very powerful fruit flavors in this wine. The finish isn't as complex as I' like but still very nice.

I tried Ladera first time vising a local restaurent in Nashville, TN. Exact vintage and my evening with friends was wonderful. Waiter had to decant it for 45 minutes. So did I at home. I think it mellowed out after 45 minutes well. I have to admit, I did try right after opening the bottle and wasn't happy. I have some more than 3 in cellar and will continue to enjoy it until it lasts.

Disclaimer: I had a sinus infection when I tried this one. I thought the wine was very good and typical of a good Napa Cab but not sure it was a WS 94 which might explain the great price for what a WS 94 pointer usually costs. I might agree more with Robert Parker on this one. I'd give it a 92.

Learn About Napa Valley

It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
