Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Free-run juice from hand-harvested fruit undergoes a cool ferment in stainless steel to preserve the bright, primary fruit flavors inherent in this noble grape. The result is a wine of brilliant clarity, almost translucent in color with subtle green tints. Fragrant meyer lemon dominates the nose, complemented by intense citrus oils and distinct mineral notes. The long, focused palate offers concentrated lime, lemon verbena and bright natural acidity, resulting in a wine of power, elegance and great persistence.

Critical Acclaim

"A beautiful riesling, with citrus blossom aromas, then a pure palate, the lime and lemon fruit shimmering all the way through to the lingering finish."
95 Points

"Pale gold. Heady aromas of bitter lemon, lime zest, quinine and anise, with a strong mineral undertone. Lush Meyer lemon, peach skin and herb flavors stain the palate, with bitter pear skin and grapefruit pith notes adding cut. Leaves smoky mineral and citrus qualities behind on the strikingly long, sappy finish. This could handle rich foods with ease."
92 Points

"The 2008 Watervale Riesling Mort's Reserve is light straw-colored with a superb nose of baking spices, spring flowers, mineral, and citrus. Rich and full-flavored on the palate with excellent focus, this tasty Riesling will evolve for several years and offer prime drinking from 2010 to 2018."
