winemaker's notes:

92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, .5% Cabernet Franc, .5% Malbec.
Grand Reserve is a masterful blend of our mountain, ridge, hillside and benchland grapes grown along California's cool coastal appellations. We hand select grapes from our best estate vineyards and then monitor, taste and hand-hold each individual lot throughout the winemaking process. Each lot is kept separate, barrel-aged and handcrafted —boutique winery style. Our winemakers have an unmatched palate of flavors, toast levels and terroir nuances from which they masterfully blend these exemplary rich, deep and complex wines.

This Cabernet has distinct flavors of black currant, blackberry, blueberry and cassis with enticing aromas of mocha and nutmeg. Notes of smoke, cedar and tobacco leaf round out the lingering finish.
—Randy Ullom, Winemaster.

critical acclaim:

"The 2007 Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is superb. Dense creme de cassis notes intermixed with fruitcake, coffee bean, and tobacco leaf are found in this fat, fleshy wine, which displays excellent purity, density, and richness. It should drink well for 15 or more years.

The Wine Advocate

"Serious Cabernet, rich and complex and full bodied, made from Knights Valley and Alexander Valley fruit, with a few grapes from Atlas Peak and Mount Veeder. Dense and tannic now, but high toned, with waves of black currants, black cherries and oak. A good price for a Cabernet of this quality. Drink now–2012."

Wine Enthusiast

"Fresh cherry flavors fill this wine with ample fruit, soft and plush in the middle, juicy in the end. It’s a finely made cabernet with a gentle structure holding all the elements in place. For flank steak."

Nice Cab. Full flavor of black fruit and some mineral. Nose is very present and enjoyable. A sniffer for sure!

Sorry about the multiple entries for this wine. On the wine itself. This wine was a pleasant find. It opens well on the nose, with deep cassis and spice and a hint of mocha. The body has sumptuous dark fruit and is nicely wrapped in smooth grape skin tannins and subtle balanced oak tannins. The mouthfeel is plushly structured and smooth with a lingering finish. Not quite a reserve Cakebread, but equally enjoyable and an absolute steal for the price.

This is an excellent wine now (if you give it about an hour to breathe first) and should hold and develop well for perhaps the next ten years. Dry, dusty, fruity, with a smooth lingering finish. Not a fruit bomb, but a solid Cabernet. Highly recommend. Was excellent with a medium rare beef tenderloin.

I was suggested this wine by some friends at work. I have been going bolder with my taste, and I found this to be a great Cabernet for the price. I enjoyed this wine with a montreal style steak, and found it to be delightful, bold, and full.

Just removing the cork was pleasant, nosing the glass and taking that first sip was a sensual experience.
