Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.2%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep purplish black in color. Aromas are powerful, rich and complex, with notes of back fruit and hints of chocolate and licorice. The palate is harmonious and elegant, exhibiting outstanding concentration and a long, lingering finish. Enjoyable in youth, it has the potential to mature and evolve for two decades.

Pairs perfectly with beef, game, truffles and mushroom-based dishes.

Critical Acclaim

"Very tightly wound, but the purity of the plum, blueberry, cherry eau-de-vie and dark currant fruit is impressive, with sleek, well-integrated toast and a very long, violet- and iron-filled finish that just sails on. Best from 2013 through 2021."
94 Points

"A full-bodied, rich wine, with tannins either supremely smoooth or just concealed under masses of plummy fruit. Yet despite the enormous ripeness, it's not lacking nuance, boasting savory notes of espresso and leather. Drinkable now, but should age through 2023, at least."
93 Points

"Dark purple. Intense aromas of cherry compote, blueberry and licorice, with a medicinal note gaining strength with air. Round, lush and broad, with a restrained sweetness to the dark berry and fruitcake flavors. A rich, pliant wine that finishes with dusty tannins, resonating sweetness and impressive length. I like this wine's blend of richness and energy and suspect that it will age gracefully."

Learn About Jean-Luc Colombo Map ItMap It

A native of Marseilles, Colombo first developed a strong admiration for the wines of the Rhone Valley in the late 1970s as a pharmacy student. A devotee of the Syrah grape, Colombo was convinced that the northern Rhone appellation of Cornas offered enormous and, at the time, unrecognized potential for producing super-quality Syrah wines. After earning degrees in pharmacy and...

Learn About Cornas

(core-NAHS) Talk about potential... the appellation of Cornas is lesser-known than its northern counterparts, but has the ability to make delicious, hearty, long-lasting wines. The hills of Cornas are steep and hug the Rhone river, as many Northern Rhone appellations do. Cornas is typically best when aged for up to 10 years, although pioneer winemakers, like Jean-Luc Columbo...

Learn About Syrah/Shiraz

(seh-RAH/shee-RAHZ) It's a Smokin' Grape Syrah and Shiraz - same grape, different name. It's a popular and adept variety, growing in multiple regions and creating many different styles of wine. The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
