Winemaker Notes

#73 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2009

Vibrant pale green. Intense floral jasmine and lemon citrus aromas with nuances of lime. Rich floral and lemon citrus flavors with underlying hints of fresh green apple and lime. The attractive talcy acidity provides structure and length to the palate. Freshness and generosity of flavor are key components of this wine. Its mineral acidity provides length and balance to the attractive varietal flavours. The wine is sealed with a screw cap and over time has the potential to develop appealing Riesling flavors of honey and toast.

Jacob's Creek, Australia
Jacob's Creek Winery Image

Jacob’s Creek is rooted in 170 years of winemaking tradition, which began when Johann Gramp planted his first vineyard on the banks of Jacob’s Creek in 1847. His vision was to create great tasting wines that reflect the true character of the grapes and the land. To this day we live and breathe this vision by producing wines that showcase how each grape variety expresses itself when shaped by the soil and the sun of Australia. Jacob's Creek has won almost 7,000 awards.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

The Barossa Zone encompasses the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. Some of the oldest vines in Australia can be found here.

Barossa Valley of course is the most important and famous wine growing region in all of Australia where 140+ year-old, dry-farmed Shiraz vines still produce inky, purple and dense juice for some of Australia's best wines.

In the cooler, wetter Eden Valley sub-region, the Hill of Grace vineyard is home to famous Shiraz vines from the 1800s but the region produces also some of Australia’s very best and age-worthy Rieslings.
