Jaboulet Parallele 45 Rouge 2003
Rhone Red Blends
from Cotes du Rhone, Rhone, France
winemaker's notes:
It is a generous wine, full of character and well constructed. Parallele 45, with its cardinal red color, is selected from noble grape varieties with as much Syrah as possible. It is a generous wine, full of character and well constructed. It has aromas of Grenache, coffee, and hawthorn. It is a wine for everyday, for happy times with the family. It is a wine for keeping as long as 7 to 8 years in a good cellar.

Finding an affordable wine this good - that's not a fruit bomb, or an over-oaked caricature of a good wine is rare. Finding a French wine this good at this price is equally so. But finding one that is this consistent, and that you can drink young or age is truly remarkable. Treat yourself to a case a year, but put half of it aside and open a bottle a year for six years. That is an education in how wine ages you likely won't get anywhere else for several times the price. If you started four years ago, you could maybe grill some lamb marinated in olive oil, garlic, lemon juice or make ratatouille and compare, say, the 1999 with the 2003 Paralelle 45s this weekend. Now that's fun in a bottle.

This was first served to me at an Indian restaurant and it complemented the foods wonderfully. I have a case of it in my cellar today because I am so pleased by the character and body, and the price is right for an impressive "everyday" wine. I pull it our frequently for guests, they always comment on how good it is.

This is a great wine for the price. Very smooth and fruity with all the elements of the old school. Better than most $30+ Bordeaux and the like.
