"One of the greatest sites in the middle Mosel, the Wehlener Sonnenuhr is a steep, south-facing wall of slate. Dr. Manfred Prum's interpretation of Sonnenuhr Riesling results in some of the Mosel's most multifaceted wines. This auslese offers a piercing scent of slate, then the palate is awash in peach, pear and lime notes, intricately layered in the dense, yet clear texture. Beautifully defined by a firm, well-integrated structure, with an endless finish. Drink now through 2020."-Wine Spectator
"Complex aromas of honeyed minerals, slate, and red fruits can be discerned in the nose of the 2001 Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Medium-bodied, this is a deep, pure, and powerful wine with outstanding depth, concentration and length. Candied red currants dominate this well-strewn offering's luscious yet delineated character."
The Wine Advocate
For centuries the Prüm family has called the village of Wehlen home. The 33.5 acre estate consists of nearly 70% ungrafted vines. Holdings are in the best parts of the top Middle-Mosel sites: Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube, and Bernkasteler Bratenhöfchen. Average annual production is 13,000 cases. The harvest at J.J. Prüm is always extremely late, and the wines are very long-lived.
