Innocent Bystander Shiraz Viognier 2007
Syrah/Shiraz from South Australia, Australia
Not your blockbuster warm-climate Aussie Shiraz, this is a more elegant example reminiscent of violets, pink peppercorns, nutmeg and caramelized quince and mulberries. The palate is likewise restrained, offering fruit compote with slightly meaty undertones. 94% Shiraz and 6% Viognier. Viognier rounds out the Shiraz and adds lovely aromatics and floral characteristics.
The Wine Advocate - "The 2007 Shiraz-Viognier (6%) is opaque purple-colored with a spicy perfume of lavender, incense, bacon, and blueberry. Round, ripe, and easy-going on the palate, it can be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years. "
International Wine Cellar - "Deep ruby. Smoky black raspberry, mocha and dried violet on the nose, along with a mineral hint. Sweet, concentrated and youthfully firm, with sexy red and blackberry flavors supported by good balancing acidity. The finish repeats the dark berry and mineral notes and clings with very good spicy persistence. This should be great with food. "

As a group of winemakers and viticulturalists who eschew the bland direction and market dominance increasingly exerted by the large corporate winemaking groups, the folks behind these wines see themselves as innocent bystanders. Alcohol By Volume GuideMost wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer.
