Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Fruit for The Protagonist is sourced from two low yielding mature vineyards (approx 30 years old) located on the western and southern edges of the valley in the Tanunda and Lyndoch sub regions of the Barossa Valley. Fruit is picked at optimum ripeness, with individual parcels matched to a selection of new and older American and French Oak where it was matured for 14 months prior to blending and bottling. The Protagonist was bottled with minimal filtration to maintain intensity of colour, structure and flavor.

Deep ruby red color with purple hues. Aroma: Raspberry & cherry fruits, mocha, vanilla, cedar, dark chocolate and plums. Palate: Generous and ripe, but not overpoweringly so. Ripe cherry fruits, with hints of vanilla, chocolate and some licorice spice. Primary fruit and oak flavors are balanced neatly with natural acidity to provide restraint and elegance to the persistent finish.

Critical Acclaim

"Full-bodied and creamy in texture, this is a big, plummy Shiraz, made complex by hinits of mocha and roasted meat. it's long, lush and berry-laden on the finish. Drink now -2015. "
