Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.6%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Aromas of black pepper, spice and mocha perfectly complement the bold fruit essences of black cherry and raspberry. Lush, concentrated flavors of sun-ripened raspberries and chocolate-covered cherries are softened by a touch of creamy oak on the mid-palate. The mouth-filling texture and velvety tannins lead to a long, smooth finish.

Critical Acclaim

"A combination of bright, floral blackberry and darker, black fig flavors form the heart of this zin. Oak scents surround it and grow only more powerful with air. The umami richness suggests juniper-spiced pork might push the oak into the background."

My favorite so far. This Zin goes down way too easy:)

Nice balance of pepper and fruit. A good lasagna or arriabata sauce basic wine. By itself, it seemed on the verge of being pruney...it's probably best to drink this fairly soon, at least by 2012.

Haywood Estates Los Chamizal Vineyard overlooks the historic town of Sonoma in the southern reaches of the Mayacamas Mountains. Guided by founder Peter Haywood, Los Chamizal Vineyard produced its first crush in 1980, and so began the legacy of robust, elegant Zinfandels. The soils are shallow - six inches to two feet - giving way to fractured red rock or volcanic tuft soil. The...

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...

Learn About Zinfandel

Zinfandel(ZIN-fahn-dell) American Grape Zinfandel the American - or Californian - grape. Although it's not from America (Croatia has been named its origin), it does seem quite at home in the vineyards of California. During Prohibition, many Zinfandel vines survived as the high-yielding grape was popular both for home winemaking and communion wine, which is...
