Winemaker's Notes

A dark and deep color with purple reflections. Spice, black fruits and delicate oak aromas. The nose is dense, expressive and intense. A tannic and racy wine with notes of plums, blackberries and vanilla. The palate is powerful, concentrated and structured. A wine from a muscular and tannic vintage wrought by a warm climate. The tannins are very strong but softened by a long oak aging.

Critical Acclaim

"A broad, muscular style, with a distinctive mix of roasted mesquite and apple wood out front, followed by lush raspberry confiture, crushed plum and blackberry fruit flavors. There's ample depth, with smoldering tobacco, juniper and mocha all mixed on the finish. Relies primarily on bass and pumps along nicely."

"The spectacular 2009 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis boasts a dense purple color along with abundant aromas of incense, charcoal, lavender, black raspberries, lard/bacon fat, licorice and background toast. This rich, full-bodied, tannic, massive Cote Rotie begs for 2-4 years of bottle age, and should drink well for two decades thereafter. Marcel Guigal believes it is the finest Chateau d'Ampuis made to date (the debut was 1995).

"Bright purple. A compelling, heady bouquet of red and dark berries, violets, Szechuan peppercorn and smoky minerals. Sappy and precise, offering palate-staining raspberry preserve and cherry-cola flavors and notes of candied flowers and spicecake. Nervy and focused on a gently tannic finish that strongly echoes the raspberry and floral notes.
Rating: 93-94"

The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the ancient village of Ampuis, home of the wines of the Cote-Rotie. In these vineyards that are over 2400 years old, you can still see the small terraced walls characteristic of the Roman period. Etienne Guigal arrived in this region in 1923 at the age of 14. He made wine for over 67 vintages and, at the beginning of his...
