Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

A blend of 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier.

When blending Sshiraz and Viognier it is beneficial to co-ferment the grapes, as opposed to blending the finished wine which generally tends to have a flavor diluting effect. Co-fermented grapes have a positive impact, as the use of Viognier improves color, softens and elaborates the tannin and gives a slight fragrant lift to the wine.

Pepper and clove aromas with subtle fragrance. Dark bramble fruit flavors balance well with gentle oak and firm tannins. Bold structure with rich, fruit forward flavors.

Critical Acclaim

"Bright ruby-red. Intriguing aromas of black raspberry, smoked meat, violet and chocolate. Sweet, dense and fine-grained, with expressive, slightly candied flavors of wild berries, exotic flowers and fresh herbs. Lush but with very good lift. Finishes with firm acids and fine tannins."

While this wine doesn't taste as good as a $30 bottle of Cote Roti, for the price I think it's not bad at all.

Saw a couple of bottles of this in a clearance rack locally - grabbed them for $7 each. Opened-up nicely in 20 minutes or so decanted. Great little wine, had it with burgers and veggies this evening - recommended and will try the 08!

Learn About South Africa

South Africa A long history of growing grapes and making wine, but less of a history on exporting it, and even lesser on the quality aspect. At the turn of the century (1900, that is), a surplus of wine in South Africa created a hierarchy of cooperatives, the biggest and best known being KWV. This organization seemed to favor quantity over quality and had most...

Learn About Rhone Red Blends

The Rhone region of France has a delightful selection of red varieties. There are 22 grapes allowed in the Rhone AOC, about half of them red. Most of these varieties are used as secondary blending partners, often comprising less than 10% of the blend. The primary red players of Rhone blends are Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Most wines from the Southern Rhone use Grenache as their...
