Winemaker's Notes

Color: Dark ruby/purple.

Aroma: A captivating and refined nose with well-integrated aromas of blackberries, violets and roasted coffee beans.

Taste: Elegance and crystal purity characterize this extremely complex and densely woven wine with an aging potential of decades

Critical Acclaim

"Plenty of fresh blackberry and cherry aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a chewy finish. Well-structured for the vintage. Very fresh and lively. Best after 2008."
94 Points

"Good full, deep red. Strawberry and raspberry fruit aromas lifted by a floral element that's rare for this hot year. Supple and silky in the mouth, with red fruit flavors complicated by flowers and minerals. Doesn't offer the lift or complexity of a more classic year, but finishes long and sweet, with rather fine tannins and lingering fresh fruit."
92 Points

"The 2003 Costa Russi is a noticeably bigger and more powerful wine than the Barbaresco. Although it is less expressive in its aromatics, it shows greater palate presence, with suggestions of super-ripe black cherries, tobacco and earthiness on a full-bodied frame with notable depth and a concentrated yet open-knit personality. It offers excellent balance, yet the hard tannins of the vintage are most penalizing in the Costa Russi and this wine comes across as somewhat heavy and ponderous in style, lacking the characteristic elegance of Gaja’s best wines. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020. "

Learn About Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo(neh-bee-OH-low) The King of Piedmont Nebbiolo is the key grape in the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. It is not the most planted variety, but it does make the most distinctive and age-worthy wines. Native to Piedmont, Nebbiolo is a bit of a soil snob - it's finicky about where it grows and has long been the honored red grape of Northern Italy...
