Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 14.2%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Our 2007 Dry Creek Merlot captures the rich, ripe flavors of the Dry Creek Valley. It is a medium-bodied wine that exhibits intense flavors of blackberry and cherry from the vineyard with hints of complementary barrel spices. This wine was made to be enjoyed young, but a bit of bottle aging will make it even more rewarding.

Critical Acclaim

"Frei has also done a very nice job with their 2007 Merlot, an opulent example revealing notions of plums, black cherries, mocha, and coffee beans. With delicious fruit, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a heady finish, this blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Petite Sirah and Zinfandel should drink well for 4-5 years. It is an excellent value."

Friends and I tasted blind the 2007 Frei Brothers Reserve Merlot (90% Merlot; 10% Petite Sirah & Zin) and the 2007 Pahlmeyer Merlot (87% Merlot, 13% Cab). Robert Parker gave the Pahlmeyer a 96 and the Frei Brothers an 88. We did not think there was an 8 point difference in these 2 wines and would rate the Friei Brothers at least a 90. Both had chocolate/cocoa and coffee bean/espresso notes with plum & black cherry fruit. The Pahlmeyer was a bit more full bodied and opulent. With the Pahlmeyer selling for around $90, the difference in price is even greater than the difference in Parker’s ratings. NOTE: for whatever reason, Parker’s rating of the 2007 Frei Brothers Reserve Merlot is listed as a Zin, making it a bit hard to find on the Wine Advocate web site.

Learn About Frei Brothers

In the late 1880s, an enterprising Swiss immigrant by the name of Andrew Frei gazed upon the rolling hills, gentle streams, and fertile soil of Sonoma County and saw a wine glass of opportunity. By 1890, he was the proud owner of a 344 acre vineyard in northern Sonoma, giving birth to a winemaking tradition that is very much alive today.Frei didn't waste any precious time once he...

Learn About Sonoma County

Twice as large as Napa in size, Sonoma County only makes about a half the amount of wine as her northeasterly neighbor. But Sonoma, with her size, is able to vouch for more diversity within her borders, including sub-AVAs that are climatically varied. The atmosphere of Sonoma is decidedly laid back and down home country style. But in wines, they are keeping up with the...

Learn About Merlot

Merlot(mehr-LOW) No second fiddle Merlot is coming back into its own. High popularity led to mass production, which then led to a backlash towards the variety (remember Miles in Sideways?). But passionate Merlot producers, and of course the right bank of Bordeaux, continued to produce quality versions of this grape. Merlot remains the principle grape of top chateaux in St...
