Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.5%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep garnet color. A rich bouquet of dark cherry, cocoa, clove, plum, tobacco and toasted oak, with delicate notes of coffee and truffle. Layered and complex. Rich and full on the palate with a supple mouthfeel and opulent layers of plum, cherry, anise, and mocha. Smooth and concentrated, the wine exhibits richly woven texture with dark, dense fruit on the long finish.

Blend: 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 6% Syrah, 1% Malbec

When you can get this on sale for $17-$19 a bottle, it's a great deal. Typical Napa cab, not outstanding but a good everday drinkable wine. Consistent between vintages.

didn't have an opportunity to enjoy this wine, because it was damaged in shipping...this was the 4th time my order from wine.com has been damaged. this was a good deal on an everyday red, however, it ended up being a NO DEAL due to being damaged...happening to often,to be an effective source to purchase quality vino!!!

Not much bouquet. Initial harshness overwhelms nice cab flavors. Improves somewhat with air exposure in glass. Disappointing for label and vintage. Not worth the price.

I am going to wait another year for this one. The bottle we drank took a long time to open up somewhat, but did not fully do so. Even 2nd day...a little thin and maybe acidic early, it got better, but...I know it's a 2009 so we're going to give this case some time to develop.

Franciscan wines take their signature style - rich, vibrant flavors framed by supple tannins - from the ideal climate offered by Napa Valley's cool, southern half and from the time-honored tradition of small-lot winemaking, blending from hundreds of barrels to craft fine wines that...

Learn About Napa Valley

It's hard not to think of Napa Valley when thinking of California wines. The region is, after all, the one that brought world recognition to California wine making. The area was settled by a few choice wine families in the 1960's who bet that the wines of the area would grow and flourish. They were right. The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Learn About Cabernet Sauvignon

(cab-uhr-NAY sow-veeh-yawn) King of Red Many refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as the king of red grapes. Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
